The article explores the philosophical and aesthetic foundations of traditional Japanese painting. The influence of Shintoism, Buddhism (Zen) and Confucianism on the formation of key artistic principles, such as wabi - sabi and yūgen, is analyzed. The main genres are considered - Yamato - e, ukiyo - e and nihonga, as well as their development from ancient times to the era of modernism.References
