Abstract

Introduction. The events of the Russian-Ukrainian war have primarily been reflected in the lexicon, which has actively been enriched with terms from the military sphere, particularly names of weaponry. Numerous linguistic studies have addressed the classification and lexico-derivational parameters of military terminology. However, weaponry nominations in the context of categorical syntactic semantics of locativity have not yet been analyzed. Purpose. The purpose of this study is to identify the features of the semantic-syntactic functioning of weaponry nominations within the locative complex of simple sentences in the Ukrainian language, based on informational media texts from the wartime period of 2022-2026. Methods. This study employs descriptive, structural, componential, transformational, and contextual-semantic analyses. Originality. This article outlines the structure of the locative complex of a simple sentence and identifies types of weaponry that can function within it. It distinguishes semantic variants (archisemes and specified semes) of locative predicates whose valency potential may include weaponry nominations. The semantic and syntactic positions of weapon names in various sentence models with spatial relations are revealed. The case and prepositional case means of expressing locatives, as well as weaponry nominations indirectly related to them, are characterized in both left and right-hand valency positions. The systemic relations between weapon names and other substantive syntacsemes within the locative complex structure are clarified. Results. According to the analyzed media material, various weaponry terms may function within the spatial coordinate system. These terms include names of ammunition as a means of direct destruction, names of launch systems as carriers of ammunition, and names of military equipment as a means of transportation. Within the structure of the locative sentence complex, weaponry nominations occupy syntactic positions of subject, instrumental, and object, as predicted by the valency of locative predicates of movement, displacement, or state. Weaponry nominations occur in the nominative case when functioning as the subject of a locative action, in the instrumental or locative case when functioning as the instrumental, and in the accusative case when functioning as the object. When combined with predicates of movement or displacement (on solid surfaces, through air, or through water), weaponry names enter an indirect distributive relation with locatives of trajectory, initial point, and final point of movement. With locative verbs expressing transportation, weaponry nominations are indirectly related to the addressee syntacseme. In addition to predicates of action or process, weaponry nominations functioning as subjects of locative state can combine with predicates of locative state and indirectly with locative syntacsemes expressing place. Conclusion. The results presented in this article, particularly the principles of valency-syntacseme analysis, can be applied to study the entire set of predicates that can valently combine with weaponry nominations and to compile grammatical dictionaries of syntacseme combinability.
