Topicality. The intense interest in matches at all levels spans various segments of the soccer – loving population, ranging in age and expertise from devoted fans to seasoned experts. It is precisely under these circumstances that ensuring the objectivity, fairness, and quality of the competitive process – which directly depends on the professional conduct of soccer referees – takes on particular significance. The professional training of referees is no longer limited to knowledge of the rules of the game and physical fitness requirements; rather, it is becoming increasingly comprehensive in nature, necessitating careful study.
The purpose of this study is to identify and justify modern approaches to improving the professional training of soccer referees.
Material and methods of the research. The study involved Ukrainian soccer referees (n = 36, including 8 women) of various ages (18–41 years) and with varying lengths of refereeing experience (ranging from 2 to over 10 years), who officiate matches at the youth, amateur, national, and international levels.
Research methods: analysis of literature sources, questionnaires, pedagogical observation, and processing and interpretation of the obtained results.
Results of the research. The study identified the characteristics of the professionalization process for soccer referees, providing empirical data on the current state of referees’ professional training and the main challenges and needs for their professional development. The cumulative impact of certain factors was demonstrated, which may reduce the effectiveness of referees’ professional growth and hinder the realization of their professional potential at various stages of their career development.
Conclusions. It has been established that improving the system of professional training for referees should be based on modern approaches, including: practice – oriented training, systematic video analysis of game situations, mentoring support for young referees, individualized training, the use of psychological training, and the development of a system of continuing education. Improving assessment criteria, mentoring, psychological support, and post – match feedback should be considered a priority alongside the development of a referee’s professional qualities.
