Topicality. The critical level of physical inactivity among young people, the dominance of sedentary IT activities and the popularization of idealized body images in social media form a dysfunctional image of one’s own physical self. This problem is particularly acute for students of professional pre-higher education (16–20 years old), as this period coincides with professional self-determination and the formation of value orientations. The purpose of the study is to conduct a comparative analysis of physical self-esteem of students of professional pre-higher education of different professional profiles to identify institutional and sex differences. Material and methods of the research. The study involved 365 students from three institutions: sports (College 1, n=155), physical education and sports (College 2, n=51) and technical (College 3, n=159) profiles. An adapted version of the Physical Self-Description Questionnaire (PSDQ) was used. Non-parametric methods were applied: the Kruskal–Wallis test and the Mann–Whitney test with Bonferroni correction. Results of the research. A statistically significant hierarchy of self-esteem was established depending on the institution profile: the highest – in College 1 (302 points), average – in College 2 (279), lowest – in College 3 (260) (H = 100.80; p < 0.05). The greatest institutional differences are on the scales of «Physical Activity» (H = 86.43) and «Strength» (H = 63.10). College 1 students outperform College 3 on all scales ( < 0.05). Sex differences were revealed: in Colleges 2 and 3, self-esteem of young men is higher than that of girls (p < 0.05), in College 1 the differences are not significant (p = 0.214). Girls rate themselves lower on «Strength», «Endurance», «Sporting Ability», but higher on «Flexibility» and «Appearance». College 1 is dominated by students with a very high level of self-esteem (young men – 43.4 %, girls – 42.4 %), College 3 – with an average level (50.0 % and 53.1 %). Conclusions. The professional profile of the institution and sex are key factors determining the level and structure of physical self-esteem. The most adequate self-perception is characteristic of students of the sports profile, the lowest – for the technical one. The identified patterns provide a basis for the development of differentiated psychological and pedagogical approaches.
