Computer science is a new notion of science, which concerns computers, data processing and
information. The English term comes from the French word “informatique”. In Poland for over 35 years we
have been using the word “informatyka”. Earlier, like in the Soviet Union, we called this part of science
“электронная вычислительная техника” (ETO – elektroniczna technika obliczeniowa – “electronic
calculation technique”). At that time we did not use the term “computer”, but called it электронная
вычислительная машина (EMC – elektroniczna maszyna cyfrowa – “electronic digital machine”). The term
“informatyka” in Poland has been in use since the late 70-ties. At that time, the subject informatyka was taught
only in several universities, particularly the faculties of mathematics, physics and chemistry, at the electronics
faculties in technical universities and at the econometrics and cybernetics faculties in economic universities. At
that time, a number of secondary schools of general education carried out experiments to teach numerical
methods as facultative subjects.
