Abstract

The article is devoted to the problem of increasing high school and university students’
motivation to learn a foreign language by Polish teachers, as well as the analysis of the changes that
motivation undergoes in the context of distance learning. The text attempts to identify motivating and
demotivating factors for the effective use of distance learning tools in the study of foreign languages
in educational institutions in Poland. The authors present theoretical considerations, generalizations,
as well as the results of empirical research of Polish teachers-practitioners in this field. The factors
that motivate young people (high school students, university students) to distance learning a foreign
language, as well as factors that have a demotivating effect are identified. The opinions and

conclusions are based on the results of independent surveys conducted by several teachers-
practitioners among students of secondary and high schools in Swietokrzyskie, Masovian and Lublin

Provinces during the early months of 2021. Recommendations for the formation of additional students’
motivation for online learning are also given. Distance learning, which has been dominating in
Ukrainian education since March 2020, including the study of foreign languages, encourages a careful
analysis of how and how successfully teachers from neighboring countries solve this problem. The
aim of the study was to identify the factors that influence students' motivation to learn a foreign
language, despite the quarantine restrictions, difficulties and inconveniences that arise during online
learning, as well as to find out what young people think about distance learning in general. The
expectations and needs of Ukrainian students for teaching a foreign language by means of distance
learning in comparison with Polish were also clarified.
