SEMANTIZATION PROBLEMS OF UKRAINIAN VOCABULARY IN A FOREIGN AUDIENCE

Abstract

The article is a piece of research that deals with the lexical aspect of future healthcare workers’
professional language, learning Ukrainian vocabulary and medical terminology by foreign students. Under the focus
was the difference between various in number and name two main groups of the ways of a foreign word semantization
- translatable and untranslatable. It is emphasized that none of the ways of semantization can be universal, acceptable
to any word; the expediency of its usage depends on the semantic and stylistic relations of equivalents in the Ukrainian
and native language, on the level of students’ preparation, the stage of study, etc. It is noted that the relevance of
various ways of semantization revive the interest in using different educational dictionaries addressed to teachers of
the Ukrainian as a foreign language and to foreign students themselves. The research attempts to prove the
expediency of combining several ways of semantization of some lexical units in a particular learning situation; one
being the main one and the others complementing it. It is stated that there is a certain connection between the ways
of semantization with the stage of study: visual techniques, one-word translation, interpretation in Ukrainian,
contextual definition, word-formation analysis, translation, synonyms, antonyms, etc. are relevant at the middle and
further stages of learning. Attention is focused to the fact that the knowledge of each student's abilities, their
language proficiency, individual characteristics, teacher's teaching skills, etc. will also tell the teacher when to use the
appropriate method.
